The Kritian Ephebe This Ephebe made by Kritios and dating from 490-480 BC, belongs to the Late Archaic period. It is considered the precursor of the later Classical sculptures of athletes. This is one of the first times in Greek sculpture that the body is in the contrapposto position: a standing position which puts the body’s weight on one leg, with a slight turn of the head.
