Sarajevo 1984
Artistic poster
The Sarajevo 1984 Olympic Games’ programme of cultural activities was full and varied. One major initiative was the production of an “Art and Sports” portfolio to which international artists such as Henry MOORE, James ROSENQUIST, Victor VASARELY and Andy WARHOL were invited to contribute. The original prints were produced in a variety of media on special paper and issued in limited editions, but also appeared in unlimited editions as offset-lithographed posters. Thus, this collection of graphics contributed a very great deal to the successful visual identity of the Games.
Howard HODGKIN is a British painter and printmaker born in London in 1932. His artistic poster features, on a red background, a green arrow that can also be seen as a fir tree. The colours are flat and vivid. This semi-abstract work, which wavers between abstraction and illustration, is in the tradition of Henri MATISSE.
Howard HODGKIN worked once more for the Olympic Games in London in 2012, when he depicted an abstract representation of swimming with blue rippling strokes.
