Sapporo 1972
Official poster.
This poster, featuring a figure skater, is the third from the four official posters published for the Sapporo 1972 Winter Games. It was released in June 1970.
Its designer, Yusaku KAMEKURA, reported: "The skating photograph was taken by Takayuki OGAWA. Being a sportsman himself, he has a good sense of motion and his photographs resemble ballet more than sport. To take this photograph, a cross beam was built above the ice and the photographer, wearing a life line, worked on it. He took over a hundred shots. First we planned to use mirror-like clean ice, but then we decided the skate-scribblings on the ice were more interesting. I had a hard time trying to decide whether to use the same layout as in the skiing poster or something entirely different. My friend Shigeo Fukuda said he thought using the same layout would give more depth and meaning to both posters, and I followed his suggestion. The skiing poster was the more popular, though designers preferred the skating poster.”
The Games’ emblem is prominent in this poster. It is the work of Kazumasa NAGAI and features a combination of three independent sections: the Rising Sun, which symbolises Japan; a snowflake, which symbolises winter; and the Olympic emblem with the words “Sapporo 1972”.
