Lit by laser at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), the fire was carried to the Museum in a relay on 23 June 1993.
It was Olympic figure skating champion Katarina WITT (GER) who lit the cauldron

On 20 July 2021, the IOC Session in Tokyo decided to highlight the unifying power of sport and the importance of solidarity by changing the Olympic motto to:
“Faster, Higher, Stronger – Together”.
Artworks produced before this date display the original motto, adopted for the Olympic Movement in 1894 by Pierre de COUBERTIN, who had borrowed it from his friend, the Dominican priest Henri DIDON.
