Prototype fencing mask, Atlanta 1996 This prototype was developed so that facial expressions could be seen. This was a request that came principally from television channels, in order to make the sport more appealing to the public. Nevertheless, the mask with a “viewing pane” was never used. It was not approved by the International Fencing Federation. The fencers themselves were not enthusiastic about it due to its effect on oxygen regulation.
