Carlos ALMARAZ (1941-1989)
Mexican-American artist born in Mexico City.
After moving to California, Carlos Almaraz was one of the founders of the Los Four, artist collective, which helped bring Chicano art to the attention of mainstream American art institutions. His work, imbued with his Hispanic sensitivities, was influenced by the symbolist landscapes of Munch, the colour range of the Fauvists and the late Impressionism of Monet. The artist is also known for his wall paintings.
Carlos’s poster…
A complex composition using symbols of both ancient and modern times. Ancient discus throwers, modern athletes, doves of peace, laurels of victory and televisions appear like fireworks in the sky above Los Angeles. The combination reflects the creativity and dynamism inspired by the Olympic Games in the Californian city.
