David HOCKNEY (1937- )
An English painter and photographer born in Bradford in Great Britain.
David Hockney is regarded as one of the most influential British artists of the 20th century, and one of the leading figures in the Pop Art movement. Defying convention, he openly explored the theme of homosexuality in his works.
After studying in London, Hockney moved to Los Angeles, where he developed his naturalistic, brightly coloured style, mainly featuring naked men in American architectural settings. In the 1960s, he worked with acrylic paints and photographs, using the latter as the basis for his paintings. He subsequently experimented with photo collages and uses new techniques as they become available.
David Hockney also created posters for the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich and the 1984 Winter Games in Sarajevo.
David’s poster…
Photograph of a swimmer. The work was created using the photomontage technique developed by the artist. The image is created by a series of 12 Polaroid photographs. The effect is to make the swimmer appear to move through the water.
“I realised that this sort of picture came closer to how we actually see, which is to say, not all-at-once but rather in discrete, separate glimpses, which we then build up into our continuous experience of the world.”
