Raymond SAUNDERS (1934- )
African-American artist born in Pittsburgh.
The artist’s work has affinities with the abstract expressionism of Robert Rauschenberg, Jim Dine and Cy Twombly.
By including found printed material in his compositions or by writing in chalk, Raymond Saunders materialises his works, thereby reinforcing their abstraction. In the 1960s, he published Black is a Color, a controversial pamphlet in which he analysed the place of African-American artists in the world of art.
