Roy LICHTENSTEIN (1923-1997)
American artist born in New York.
Influenced by both popular advertising and the comic book style, Roy Lichtenstein was a leading figure in American Pop Art. Whaam!, created in 1963, is generally considered to be one of the first Pop Art works. He specialised in large paintings, and to create his compositions used dots and strokes like those in cheap comic strips. Those who look at them are plunged into an unreal, fictitious world of the imagination.
Roy’s poster…
Representation of a series of riders and their horses. The decomposition of the shapes reinforces the idea of movement. This is a nod to Red Horseman, an oil on canvas produced in 1970s.
Although the feeling was that Roy Lichtenstein’s poster would be the official poster for the Games in Los Angles, the Organising Committee finally chose the one by Robert Rauschenberg.
