Gary WINOGRAND (1928 - 1984)
American photographer born in New York.
In 1955, after discovering Walker Evans’s images of passers-by in the New York subway, Winogrand decided to start photographing people anonymously. The ordinariness of everyday life became his field of experimentation. His photographs never sought to explore people’s intimacy, but rather to capture a moment of life on film, leaving the viewer to interpret the images as he chooses.
Gary’s poster…
Copy of a black-and-white image in which the photographer immortalises the training session of an anonymous weightlifter. The smile on the amateur athlete’s face gives an idea of his pride at being photographed.
