Managing waste was a driving concept at the 2000 Games in Sydney. As a result, 400,000 pieces of furniture (chairs, desks, bookcases) were created from recyclable cardboard to be used throughout the majority of the Organising Committee’s different activity sectors. After the Games, the furniture was converted back into paper or cardboard.
During the 1998 Olympic Winter Games in Nagano, close to 900,000 plates were used in the Olympic Village restaurants. Made from apple pulp mixed with paper pulp, the plates were 100% recyclable as paper or other solid wastes.
