Costume worn by a delegation standard-bearer Beijing 2008 This open jacket is inspired by the dresses worn during the Qing Dynasty (1616-1912). These costumes followed Manchu dress codes, notably the split dress, which originally allowed freedom of movement while riding a horse. The costume also features two lucky colours: red and yellow. Red, the most popular colour in the country, symbolises fire and embodies happiness, beauty, vitality, luck and success. Yellow evokes royalty and symbolises the earth. Historically, it had special status as the colour of the emperors.
