Physical description

Obverse: representation of a woman, allegory of Glory, holding a laurel wreath in her right hand and a palm branch in her left hand. She sits on steps that have bas-reliefs depicting a chariot with horses. To his right is an amphora. In the background there is a two-storey building with arcades. Caption: "XV / OLYMPIA / HELSINKI / 1952". Reverse: victorious athlete, carried in triumph by a procession of athletes, who salutes the public and holds a palm branch with his left hand. Presence of a building in the background. Bottom right, near the edge, initials "GC" of the artist Giuseppe Cassioli. Edge: presence of 5 hallmarks: (1) a lying lion being the hallmark of the manufacturer, (2) a crown inserted in a heart attesting a national manufacture, (3) H916 attesting the title in 935 thousandths, (4) a castle which symbolizes the city of Hämeenlinna where the medal was produced and (5) Y6 which indicates the year of manufacture in 1952.
