Physical description

Medal with belly ring and ribbon in two shades of purple. The medal is made of sparagmite and is set in a bronze frame. Obverse: in the centre, Olympic symbol in bronze on the sparagmite part, caption: "THE XVII OLYMPIC WINTER GAMES". Visual identity of the Games on the bronze part with the caption: "Lillehammer '94". Reverse: name of the sport in English as a caption on the sparagmite medal. Pictogram of the sport on the bronze part with the emblem and visual identity of the Games and the name of the event in English as a caption. On the right side at the bottom we find the initials "IH / TH.M" which are those of the artist and the manufacturer. Openwork edge of the bronze frame.

Lillehammer 1994 Ingjerd Hanevold, who created the medals, says she designed them to be "humorous, sober and recognizable" and that their design "is Norwegian through and through". Her innovative surprise was to use granite - sparagmite to be precise - as the basic material. The Olympic Museum Collections
