Torch, Tokyo 1964. In 1964, the Olympic Games were celebrated in Asia for the first time. For Tokyo, however, it was a second opportunity, one that it had originally been given for 1940 but later bowed out of due to war. With this second chance, Tokyo welcomed the world to a modern new Japan. The final torchbearer was Yoshinori Sakai, who was known as the “Baby from Hiroshima” on account of his being born the day of the atomic explosion. His presence thus represented peace and hope.
