London 1908, winner's medal, gold, attributed to John FLANAGAN (USA), for hammer throw.

Physical description

Medal with bail and ring. Obverse: a naked athlete holds a palm branch with his left hand, behind him there are two seated female figures who crown the athlete with a laurel wreath. On the seats of the two women is the caption: "OLYMPIC / GAMES; LONDON / 1908". Initials of the artist "BM" at the athlete's feet on the left. Reverse: Saint George on horseback, patron saint of England, piercing the dragon with his spear. To his left is a winged victory holding the horse's straps in his left hand and a palm branch in his right hand. To the right of the rider is an oak tree. Edge: caption: WINNER THROWING HAMMER at the base of the medal. Manufacturer's hallmark "V & S" at the top of the medal with two hallmarks: "15" and "625", and under the bail is, it is assumed, the name of the manufacturer "...[T]ON".
