Freestyle skiing was presented as a demonstration sport in Calgary in 1988 with moguls, jumps and ballet events. Pour years later in Albertville in 1992, moguls became the first freestyle skiing event to obtain official Olympic medal status, while jumps and ballet remained demonstration events. In Lillehammer in 1994, aerials joined moguls as an official Olympic event. Sonny Schönbächler of Switzerland, who was taking part in an international competition for the first time since 1984, was not considered a strong medal contender, especially since he had returned from retirement to take part in the competition, but he ultimately achieved an unexpected victory ahead of Canadians Philippe LaRoche and Lloyd Langlois.
