The Beijing National Stadium, nicknamed the “Bird’s Nest” by the Chinese, was designed by Swiss architects Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron. Its shape is inspired by Chinese ceramics and it hides supports for a retractable roof, a plan which was eventually abandoned. The Stadium is made up of two distinct parts: the woven steel structure and the cement bowl interior. It was used as the main stadium during the Beijing 2008 Olympic and Paralympic Games and was used for athletics and the final rounds of the football tournament, as well as the Opening and Closing Ceremonies.
