Mexico 1968, winner's medal, gold, awarded to Roland MATTHES (GDR), 100m backstroke swimming.
Obverse: representation of a woman, allegory of Glory, holding a laurel wreath in her right hand and a palm branch in her left hand. She is sitting on steps that have bas-reliefs representing a chariot with horses. To her right is an amphora. In the background there is a two-storey building with arcades. Caption: "XIX / OLIMPIADA / MEXICO / 1968". Reverse: victorious athlete, carried in triumph by a procession of athletes, who greets the public and holds a palm branch with his left hand. There is a building in the background. Medal linked to the ribbon by a plaque with the pictogram of swimming on the front and the caption: "100 mts. / dorso / varonil" on the back of the plaque. Light blue ribbon.
