Notes

The final segment of the Opening Ceremony explored popular culture through music, film and television. In celebrating the British inventor of the internet, it marked the transformation of society brought about by the information age. The main characters in this part were two young lovers, Frankie and June. Meeting via texts and social media, they then travelled through night clubs, enjoying music from the 1960s to the 1990s. This costume evoked the 1970s period. The party continued with the whole Stadium being invited back to June’s parents’ house. Inside the house sat Sir Tim Berners-Lee, the scientist who invented the world wide web.
