Fencing mask worn by Mariel ZAGUNIS (USA), London 2012. The individual sabre Olympic champion in Athens in 2004 and in Beijing in 2008 was chosen by the American athletes as the US flag bearer for the London 2012 Opening Ceremony. Unlike foil and épée, visor masks are allowed for sabre events. This one is made from two layers; an inner polycarbonate layer and an outer scratch layer that is inexpensive and quick to replace. It has a particularly large radius of curve, which means fencers have a wider range of vision and no distortion. The inner surface of the visor is pre-coated with an anti-mist formulation that was designed for use by fighter pilots. The Olympic Museum Collections
