Notes
What an unforgettable image a rocket man flying over the Olympic Stadium was! It was the starting point for a Ceremony with a distinct Hollywood flavour and flair.
Dressed in identical suits, the 800-member Olympic All-American Marching Band played a medley entitled “Music of America”.
Across the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, the predominant colour was white, chosen for its summery and sporting associations, according to the suit’s designer, Ray Aghayan. He also wanted to convey the spirit of the west coast of America and its sporty, outdoor lifestyle.

The Opening Ceremony was designed by a team of Hollywood veterans led by David Wolper, who eventually replaced Disney. The Ceremony combined a formal ceremonial opening, including welcoming speeches, the raising of flags and the parade of athletes, with an artistic show to highlight the host nation's culture. Highlights of the Ceremony included the appearance by a rocket man flying over the Olympic Stadium, and a musical medley played by an All-American Olympic marching band entitled “Music of America”. This costume was worn by the 800 members of the marching band conducted by Dr Arthur Bartner. Fashion designer Ray Aghayan was the costume head designer for the opening and closing ceremonies, and he said that the spirit he wanted his costumes to convey was "as American as possible and at the same time as California and as sporty as possible”. For that reason, the predominant colour in the costumes was white. "White is just happy," he explained. "And it's very summer. I don't think there's anything better."
