Both the Opening and Closing Ceremonies addressed the topics of environmental conservation and climate change, while celebrating the richness of Brazilian wildlife. A segment in the Opening Ceremony was devoted to the Amazonian forest and the struggle of native people to protect nature. During the Closing Ceremony, a giant Tree of Life was displayed. Performers dressed in bird and plant costumes danced around the tree. This costume represented a South American native flowering plant, the bromeliad.
