London 2012 and Rio 2016 – judogi and flip-flop worn by Haruka TACHIMOTO (JAP),
Olympic champion in Rio in 2016.
When making her donation, the athlete explained that she was donating her judogi from London (where she lost) and her shoes from Rio (where she won) to symbolise her journey between the two Games. “Winning the gold medal in Rio was ultimately down to the disappointing experience of finishing seventh at the London Games. When I won the Olympic medal, I would have liked to have given the me from the London Games a big hug, as I was so upset at the time… [The people I met and the trips I made between the Games in London and Rio] helped me to develop and
strengthen my sporting mindset. It is not the medal that is important, it’s the hard work to get there.”
