Ice skates used by Aliona SAVCHENKO (GER), Olympic champion
Aljona SAVCHENKO and Brunot MASSOT beat the free skate points world record (159.31 points) and won the gold medal in the figure skating pairs event - the first time a German pair had achieved this since 1952.
But Aljona was no newcomer: with her previous partner, Robin SZOLKOWY (GER), she was a two-time Olympic bronze medallist (2010 and 2014); five-time world champion (2008, 2009, 2011, 2012 and 2014); four-time European champion (2007, 2008, 2009 and 2011); and eight-time German champion (between 2004 and 2014).

After the team event, the gold medal went to Germany and the pairing of Aljona Savchenko and Bruno Massot. When Savchenko was asked why she had devoted her
life to figure skating, she replied: “What I like is that it’s not only a sport, there is a more artistic dimension. Art, sport and music. We do difficult things but with more
passion. For me, that’s art on ice.”
