The founder of the Zen tradition of Buddhism, the Indian monk Daruma, is said to have sat meditating for nine years without moving, causing him to lose the use of his arms and legs – hence the round shape of the traditional Daruma doll. The figure always returns to an upright position when tilted over. The Daruma symbolises success and perseverance: an example for athletes the world over!
