Data storage vial containing Cathy FREEMAN (AUS)’s winning 400m race
at Sydney 2000 encoded on synthetic DNA.
To mark the 20th anniversary of Cathy Freeman’s victory in the 400m at the Olympic Games Sydney 2000, the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia (NFSA) and the Olympic Foundation for Culture and Heritage launched a project to preserve the images of the event. The use of emerging synthetic DNA data storage technology for
archiving purposes was a world first. The one-gigabyte digitised file can now be preserved for thousands of years.
