Tokyo 2020, lantern carried and costume worn by Aoi Yamada during the “We Remember – Moment of Remembrance” sequence at the Closing Ceremony. This costume was worn during the segment held in memory of those who had died. The sequence was also a tribute to Japan’s resilience in the wake of the Fukushima disaster. Yamada’s costume – evoking the trees that have borne witness to history – was designed by Kumiko Iijima. The concept is that even though the outer layer of the bark is no longer alive, the trunk continues to live on and strengthens its connection with the land, with its roots stretching deep into the earth.
