Athens 1896, reproduction of the black-figure skyphos awarded to Spyridon LOUIS (GRE) following his victory in the marathon event.

Physical description

Reproduction of a Boeotian skyphos (6th century BC). Side A: two naked athletes running, surrounded by two judges. Side B: identical motif. Palmette in the area of the handles. Disc foot. Name of the artist under the foot with a Greek state stamp. Greek customs lead on a handle.

Notes

After winning the marathon at the first modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896, Spyridon Louis was given an Ancient Greek skyphos, a two-handled wine cup. Kept for many years at the Archaeological Museum of the University of Münster, it was recently returned to Greece, and is now on display at the Museum of the History of the OlympicGames of Antiquity at Olympia.
