Munich 1972, vase in which Franz SAMUEL kept the Olympic flame. As the torchbearers were going through his neighbourhood, Franz Samuel “stole” a spark from the Olympic flame by holding a piece of wood into the fire. He subsequently transferred it to vase filled with oil, which he kept in his home in Hohenschäftlarn, near Munich, for 50 years. After his death, his widow presented it to IOC President Thomas Bach at a formal ceremony at the Olympic Stadium. The flame was transferred to a torch, and was finally extinguished. Private donation
