Chamonix 1924, curling stone used in the Olympic tournament.
Curling was on the official programme of the first Olympic Winter Games in Chamonix in 1924, with a men’s event. Not having its own federation, the sport struggled to develop. It was absent in 1928 and returned as a demonstration sport at the Games in 1932. After another long absence, it was back at the Olympic Winter Games at Calgary 1988, still as an exhibition sport, but this time with two events – men’s and women’s. It was not until the Nagano Games in 1998 that the sport re-acquired a place on the Olympic programme.
