The closing ceremony was directed by Thomas Jolly. The Golden Voyager, played by Arthur Cadre, was the main character in the show at the closing ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Imagined by Joly, this red thread was a direct reference to the Voyager Golden Record, a disc sent into space by NASA in 1977.
The Records segment presented the Golden Voyager landing on Earth. In the distant future, the Olympic Games have disappeared again. A Golden Voyager from another space-time, a character inspired by the world of science fiction, has landed in the centre of the stadium and explored a world where the Olympic Games were once celebrated. Following in the footsteps of Pierre de Coubertin, he exhumed the vestiges of past Olympic Games to bring them back to life. The aim of the show was to introduce spectators to a number of symbols that marked the founding of the Games and the values of unity and peace that they conveyed. Once rediscovered and restored by the Golden Voyager and its companions, the Olympic rings were lifted into the sky as the greatest human monument.
Swiss-based fashion designer Kevin Germanier designed and created all stage outfits worn by the artists and acrobats at the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games. A trademark of the designer, all were made using upcycled materials.
The character was inspired by a number of references from France's historical heritage, starting with the Génie de la Bastille, the allegorical sculpture of Liberty that crowns the July Column, as well as creatures from science fiction and video games.
