A precocious athlete, Debbie Brill developed a revolutionary backward jumping technique known as the ‘Brill bend’. She approached the bar directly from the side and threw herself backwards to land on her back. She developed this technique independently of American high jumpers Dick Fosbury and Bruce Quande, who developed similar jumping techniques at the same time.
