This was Kim Jisoo’s second Olympic appearance who had previously competed at the 2018 Winter Olympics. Her helmet attracted media attention. The athlete wanted to give it cultural significance through the choice of symbols adorning the helmet. The word ‘Funfun’ inscribed on the front is inspired by Bongsan Talchum, a traditional Korean masked dance, and more specifically by the ‘Palmokjung’ dance, in which corrupt monks appear and display their dancing skills in a humorous manner. This performance satirises social issues and reflects Korean humour. The Korean consonant ‘ㅎ’ is a simple way of expressing ‘Heung (흥)’, which means joy and enthusiasm. The traditional lanterns (Cheongsachorong) depicted in the design symbolise the wish that Korean culture will shine throughout the world. On the side of the helmet, the ‘Tiger General’ is a traditional guardian figure who protects against evil, misfortune and illness.
