This challenge cup was won by Charles Bartlett in the 100km cycling race. It is one of eight challenge cups awarded at the London 1908 Olympic Games and the only one of royal provenance. Challenge cups were temporary rewards because they were passed along to the succeeding gold-winning athlete of the following Games. However, the 100km cycling race was not renewed in 1912 and when the Stockholm1912 Organising Committee requested permission to use this challenge cup for the 300km race, but the British Olympic Association refused. The prize stayed in the athletes family. Auction purchase
