Notes
Wearing dresses inspired by traditional Mexican costumes, hostesses presented medals to the victorious athletes on the podium. The flower motifs drew a visual link to the host country’s colourful art forms.
When the Olympic flag was brought into the Stadium to be raised, it was escorted by women in similarly traditional Mexican costumes and others wearing kimonos, underlining the connection between the host country and Japan, which had staged the previous Olympic Games in Tokyo in 1964.
Tokyo 1964
Costume worn by hostesses who presented the medals at the victory ceremony.
This costume was worn during several medal ceremonies at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City by the wife of James Dubin, who was Director of the Mexican association of travel agencies (AMAV) at the time. At the Opening Ceremony, women in kimonos and traditional Mexican costumes accompanied the military escort of the Olympic flag during its official presentation and raising. They created a connection between the host country, Mexico, and Japan, the country that had staged the previous Olympic Games, in Tokyo in 1964.
