Notes

Greek sculptor Georgios Vroutos, who wanted to express his feelings towards the Olympic ideal, created a bust of a winged Nike, made of plaster of Paris, for Olympic champions. He engraved the name of a winner on the base of each piece and sent his 21 busts to the organisers so that they could offer them as souvenirs to foreign winners. Ellery Clark is the only man to have won the Olympic high jump and long jump events. He became a highly versatile athlete but failed to repeat his victory at the 1904 Olympic Games in St. Louis.
